Dangote Cement Raises Safety Standards With Driver Retraining

Dangote Cement doubles down on safety

Dangote Cement Plc has reinforced its reputation as Nigeria’s most safety-conscious logistics operator. The company has retrained hundreds of truck drivers to improve efficiency and promote accident-free roads. At its 2025 Annual Drivers’ Retreat in Ibese, Ogun State, more than 900 drivers took part in a rigorous retraining session. The event, themed Absolute Safer Roads, highlighted the Group’s commitment to driver welfare, responsible operations, and public safety. The initiative continues next week at Obajana, Kogi State, where another group of drivers will receive the same training.

A culture of responsibility

Group Managing Director Arvind Pathak explained that safety sits at the heart of Dangote Cement’s operations. With thousands of trucks on Nigerian roads, the company carries a unique responsibility. “Safety is not just a policy for us. It is part of our DNA. Every driver is an ambassador of Dangote and must operate at the highest standards,” Pathak stated. He reaffirmed the company’s dedication to accountability and a zero-tolerance approach to reckless driving. Dangote Cement also works closely with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to refine its safety practices.

How drivers are recruited and trained

Every driver undergoes a strict recruitment process that exceeds industry norms. Applicants must hold a valid Class G licence and pass background checks. They also complete medical screenings, including vision tests, blood pressure monitoring, and random drug and alcohol checks. Successful applicants then begin a two-week training programme that covers twelve safety modules. This is followed by practical driving sessions, written exams, and performance reviews. Only drivers who meet the standards are certified to operate Dangote trucks. Before each trip, drivers go through health checks conducted by licensed medical professionals. These include eyesight tests, blood pressure checks, and general fitness assessments. In the past two months, over 2,000 drivers have completed this process, showing the consistency of Dangote’s safety culture.

Collaboration and recognition

Dr James Adenuga, Group Chief of Health, Safety, Social and Environment, explained that safety is taught in a way drivers can easily understand and apply. The company also recognises and celebrates drivers who show exemplary conduct. Collaboration with the FRSC ensures that training modules align with national safety standards. This partnership reduces road accidents and prepares drivers for professional excellence.

Expert advice on safe driving

Road Safety Consultant Oje Ebhota delivered a session on driving habits. He warned against impatience, aggressive behaviour, alcohol use, and phone distractions. He also urged drivers to obey speed limits and show courtesy to other road users. “Drivers are not only employees of Dangote Cement, they are its ambassadors. Their conduct on the road reflects on the brand,” Ebhota said.

A commitment beyond business

Dangote Cement’s investment in safety goes far beyond business operations. By training drivers and monitoring compliance, the company is protecting lives and improving community wellbeing. This initiative shows how Nigerian businesses can combine responsibility with efficiency. With such efforts, Dangote Cement is setting a new benchmark for road safety in Africa’s logistics sector.
