The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned Nigerians to prepare for three days of thunderstorms and rainfall from Monday to Wednesday. The agency released the outlook on Sunday in Abuja, through the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Storms in the North
NiMet expects isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains across northern states on Monday morning. States to watch include Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba. Later in the day, more thunderstorms will spread across the region. Heavy downpours may trigger flash floods in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe.
Central Region Outlook
The central region will start Monday with cloudy skies and sunshine intervals. Later, residents in Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory should expect thunderstorms with moderate rainfall.
Weather in the South
NiMet predicts cloudy conditions in the southern region on Monday morning. By afternoon, moderate rains will fall across Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River.
On Tuesday, cloudy skies will dominate the northern region in the morning. By afternoon, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall will cover Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, and Zamfara.
In the central region, cloudy conditions will give way to rains and thunderstorms over Niger, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, and the FCT. Southern states, including Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Delta, will record light to moderate rainfall throughout the day.
Wednesday Conditions
NiMet projects cloudy skies over Sokoto and Zamfara on Wednesday morning, with slim chances of rain. However, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains will spread across other northern states in the afternoon and evening.
In the central region, light morning showers will develop into heavier rains and thunderstorms later in the day. Across the south, moderate rainfall will dominate.
Safety Advice for Nigerians
NiMet urged motorists to avoid driving in heavy rain and advised farmers to suspend fertiliser and pesticide application before storms. The agency also called on residents to secure loose objects, switch off electrical appliances, and avoid tall trees during thunderstorms.
Airline operators were encouraged to obtain airport-specific updates for safe flight planning. NiMet reminded the public to follow its daily forecasts through official platforms.
With rainfall intensifying across the country, NiMet’s alert serves as a timely reminder for Nigerians to take precautions. Awareness and preparation remain key to reducing risks from heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
