NPA Deploys Electronic Barrier Systems to Curb Truck Diversions at Lagos Ports

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has introduced Electronic Barrier Systems (EBS) at all Lagos port terminals. This move targets unauthorised truck diversions, reduces congestion, and improves efficiency across Nigeria’s busiest trade route.

New Era for Port Access Management

NPA Managing Director Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho announced that the barriers are now fully operational. The systems connect directly with the Eto Electronic Call-Up System, managed by Trucks Transit Parks Ltd.

Dr. Dantsoho described the innovation as a game-changer. It ensures that only trucks with valid call-up tickets access the terminals. This closes the loopholes that previously allowed unauthorised entries.

Tackling Lagos Port Gridlock

For years, the Mile 2 to Tin Can to Apapa corridor suffered constant traffic jams. These gridlocks delayed cargo movement and disrupted port operations.

To address this, NPA introduced the Eto electronic call-up platform in 2021. The system required trucks to wait at approved holding bays until scheduled through the app. The initiative improved planning but did not completely stop illegal diversions.

The newly deployed barriers now close that gap. They act as a physical checkpoint that denies entry to trucks without pre-approved tickets.

Supporting Ease of Doing Business

Dr. Dantsoho highlighted that the project aligns with the Federal Government’s Ease of Doing Business agenda. It will strengthen gate control, speed up operations, and create a safer, business-friendly environment.

NPA also thanked industry stakeholders who supported the planning process. Their input helped shape the final solution, ensuring it meets operational needs.

Step Toward a Modern Port System

NPA described the deployment as a major step toward modernising port infrastructure. The authority aims to make Lagos ports a leading maritime logistics hub in Africa.

The new system improves transparency, coordinates truck movement, and reduces congestion. NPA remains committed to introducing more technology-driven solutions to boost efficiency and support Nigeria’s growing trade sector.
