MyFoodAngels Introduces Sustainable Packaging to Reduce Plastic Waste

Lagos-based grocery delivery startup, MyFoodAngels, is taking a bold step towards sustainability by introducing reusable packaging and biodegradable alternatives to cut down plastic waste.
The company, known for delivering farm-fresh foods and personalised meal recommendations, is implementing eco-friendly solutions as part of its long-term commitment to reducing environmental impact.

Shifting Away from Single-Use Plastics
Over the past months, MyFoodAngels has tested multiple ways to minimise plastic use in its supply chain. One of its key initiatives is the introduction of a refill system for palm oil, allowing customers to reuse existing bottles instead of discarding them.
“Imagine someone buying five kegs of five-litre palm oil from us over five months. That would leave them with unnecessary plastic waste,” said Olapeju Umah, CEO of MyFoodAngels.
With the refill model, customers return their used kegs and receive a discount, bringing the cost down from ₦4,000 to ₦3,850 per litre. This not only helps the environment but also provides cost savings for consumers.

MyFoodAngels is also tackling waste in egg packaging by launching a crate return system. Instead of accumulating unused egg crates at home, customers can return them during deliveries, ensuring minimal waste.
The company is exploring biodegradable plastics as a long-term alternative for all grocery deliveries, making it the first Nigerian grocery delivery platform to prioritise eco-friendly packaging at scale.
Growth and Expansion Plans
MyFoodAngels has experienced significant growth, serving over 50,000 customers in 2024 and quadrupling its gross merchandise value (GMV) in the past year. The company has built a strong supply chain through direct partnerships with local farmers and its in-house palm oil milling operation.
Looking ahead, MyFoodAngels is seeking $500,000 in funding to:
- Expand beyond Lagos into new markets.
- Invest in product development within the fishing sector.
- Launch its mobile app, currently in beta, to improve the customer experience and streamline orders.
The Future of Sustainable Grocery Delivery
With its continued push for sustainable packaging, MyFoodAngels is positioning itself as a leader in eco-conscious grocery delivery in Nigeria. By reducing plastic waste and introducing cost-effective refill models, the company is redefining how fresh food is sourced, packaged, and delivered; one innovation at a time.
