Zenith Bank Rewards D’Tigress with ₦200 Million for Historic AfroBasket Victory
In the heart of Abuja, amid celebration and national pride, Zenith Bank Plc reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to Nigerian sports by honouring the trailblazing D’Tigress team. The bank hosted the reigning African champions at its Maitama head office on Tuesday, rolling out a grand reception in recognition of their fifth consecutive AfroBasket championship title.
As a mark of appreciation, Zenith Bank gifted the victorious D’Tigress squad a total sum of ₦200 million. Each player received ₦10 million, credited directly to their Zenith Bank accounts. The technical team and support staff shared the remaining amount, acknowledging the team-wide effort behind the historic win.
A Moment of Glory Meets a Legacy of Support
D’Tigress returned to Nigeria on Monday after defeating Mali 78 to 64 in the finals of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament held in Abidjan. Their victory was met with national recognition as they were received by President Bola Tinubu. At the reception, each player was awarded national honours and financial rewards.
For Zenith Bank, the victory marked more than a sporting triumph. It reflected nearly two decades of investment in the future of Nigerian women’s basketball. For 18 years, the bank has consistently sponsored the National Women’s Basketball League. This platform has shaped many athletes who now shine on the global stage. Players like Murjanatu Musa, MVP of Air Warriors in 2022, and Ifunnaya Okoro, both came through the Zenith-sponsored league. So did current D’Tigress coach Rena Wakama, who played for First Bank Women’s Basketball Team.
Zenith Executives Celebrate a Win Beyond the Court
The reception was graced by top executives of Zenith Bank including Adobi Nwapa, Akin Ogunranti, Henry Oroh, and Louis Odom. All expressed admiration for the team’s performance and commitment.
Also in attendance were prominent figures in the Nigerian sports ecosystem. Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, and Musa Kida, President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, joined members of the NBBF board in what was a colourful and proud occasion.
The atmosphere was filled with admiration, applause, and emotion as the team’s journey was recounted. From training camps to championship gold, it was a reminder that success takes partnership, perseverance, and purpose.
Zenith Bank’s Pledge to Champion Nigerian Women in Sports
Speaking at the event, the Group Managing Director and CEO of Zenith Bank, Dame Dr Adaora Umeoji OON, reaffirmed the bank’s unwavering commitment to women’s basketball in Nigeria.
“Your victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket is not just a win for Nigeria. It is a win for African sports,” she said.
“At Zenith Bank, we celebrate your success not just as fans, but as partners in your journey. We will continue to support your dreams and expand opportunities for women in sports.”
Her words highlighted a deeper truth. Brands can be more than financial institutions. They can be enablers of dreams and builders of legacies.
A Grateful Team Speaks
Responding on behalf of her teammates, team captain and tournament MVP Amy Okonkwo expressed deep gratitude.
“We are truly grateful. Zenith Bank has done more than just support us. They have believed in us for years,” she said. “This gesture means a lot, and it motivates us to do even more.”
With the world watching and history written, this partnership between Zenith Bank and D’Tigress remains one of Nigeria’s most powerful brand and sports alliances.
