Airtel Nigeria Celebrates World Environment Day with Nationwide Clean-Up Campaign

Lagos, Nigeria – June 5, 2025 — Airtel Nigeria, a leading telecommunications provider, has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability by launching a nationwide campaign in celebration of World Environment Day 2025. This year’s theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution”, aligns with Airtel’s mission to promote eco-conscious practices and reduce plastic waste across Nigeria.
#UnPlasticAfrica: A Week of Action
Kicking off on June 3, Airtel Nigeria activated the #UnPlasticAfrica campaign, mobilising staff across its six operating regions for a week-long series of activities focused on education, environmental advocacy, and plastic cleanup efforts.
The campaign began with a Sustainability Seminar hosted in Lagos. The keynote speaker, Dr. Hassan A. Sanuth, Director of Sanitation Services at the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, educated participants on the environmental and health impacts of plastic waste. He emphasized the importance of individual and collective responsibility, especially in urban areas like Lagos.
“Plastic waste is choking our drains, polluting our water bodies, and threatening public health,” Dr. Sanuth said. “Microplastics have been found in our food, water, and even our blood. We need stronger policies, corporate action, and individual discipline.”
Following the seminar, Airtel employees across the country took the “Eco Pledge” to switch to reusable containers and reduce single-use plastics.

CEO Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainability
Dinesh Balsingh, CEO of Airtel Nigeria, reiterated the company’s commitment to sustainable development in his opening remarks:
“As we build Nigeria’s digital future, we are equally committed to preserving the environment. From AI-driven solutions that cut paper use to partnerships that bring connectivity with minimal environmental disruption, sustainability is core to our strategy.”
Nationwide Market Cleanups and Community Engagement
The campaign climaxed with market cleanup drives and sensitisation activities in Abuja, Oyo, Benin, Enugu, and Kano. Airtel staff volunteers, working with local partners, collected plastic waste, conducted environmental hygiene training, and distributed over 3,000 branded reusable bags and parasols to market vendors and shoppers.
These efforts aimed to promote long-term behavioural change and encourage eco-friendly alternatives in public spaces.
Earth Fest 2025: Airtel’s Ongoing CSR Commitment
The World Environment Day celebration, nicknamed Earth Fest 2025, is a key initiative under Airtel Nigeria’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Strategy. The company continues to integrate sustainability across its business operations, championing both innovation and environmental stewardship.
