WAEC Extends 2025 CB WASSCE Registration to September 19
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has extended the registration deadline for the 2025 Computer Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB WASSCE) for Private Candidates, Second Series.
The new closing date is Friday, September 19, 2025, giving prospective candidates two additional weeks to register. WAEC announced the update on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, encouraging candidates to take advantage of the extension.
Why the Extension Matters
This development is crucial for candidates who have not yet completed their registration. The CB WASSCE Second Series is designed for private candidates who missed the school-based May/June WASSCE. It allows them to obtain the same globally recognized certificate.
Before this announcement, the registration was set to close on Friday, September 5, 2025. The extra time will likely reduce late registration pressure and enable more students to participate.
WAEC’s Push for Computer Based Examinations
WAEC introduced the Computer Based WASSCE to modernize its examination process. The council aims to combat examination malpractice, streamline administration, and align with global best practices.
The first CB WASSCE was conducted in 2024 using a hybrid format. Candidates viewed questions on computer screens but still wrote answers with pen and paper. The approach allowed WAEC to test the system’s readiness before going fully digital.
In 2025, WAEC transitioned completely to computer based testing for private candidates. This marked a major milestone in its digital transformation journey.
Building for the Future
WAEC has ambitious plans for 2026, when it will adopt computer based testing for all examinations. The council is investing in infrastructure, upgrading centers, and training personnel to handle the transition.
In April 2025, WAEC launched the official WAEC E Study Portal at waec.estudy.ng. The platform gives students access to past questions, marking schemes, examiners’ reports, and personalized learning analytics. The council’s goal is to empower candidates with resources that reflect real exam standards and improve overall performance.
What This Means for Candidates
With the new registration deadline, candidates have a second chance to secure their spot. Those who were unable to register earlier due to technical issues, lack of funds, or other delays now have a window of opportunity.
Education experts recommend that students use the extended period to prepare adequately. They can leverage WAEC’s E Study Portal to familiarize themselves with the exam format and practice under real test conditions.
This extension reflects WAEC’s commitment to accessibility and fairness, ensuring that no eligible candidate is left behind as the council embraces a fully digital examination era.
