Coca-Cola Foundation Provides Clean Water to 16,000 People in Borno

In a major step toward improving water security, the Coca-Cola Foundation has provided access to clean water for over 16,000 people in Borno State through its Strengthening Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Service Delivery (S-WASH) initiative.

Implemented in partnership with the Global Environment & Technology Foundation (GETF) and WaterAid, the S-WASH initiative focused on rehabilitating boreholes, setting up handwashing stations, and providing hygiene training for women and youth to ensure the long-term maintenance of water facilities.

A Commitment to Water Security

The Coca-Cola Foundation’s initiative aligns with World Water Day, an annual event observed on March 22 to raise awareness about the 2.2 billion people globally who lack access to safe water.

Carlos Pagoaga, President of the Coca-Cola Foundation, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to solving water challenges in Nigeria.

“This water project is an example of our efforts to scale and accelerate access to safe drinking water and improve water security across Nigeria. We are grateful to work with local partners and communities to amplify our impact,” Pagoaga stated.

Addressing Water Scarcity in Borno

Borno State has long faced severe water shortages, affecting public health, education, and overall quality of life. The Coca-Cola Foundation clean water project in Borno specifically targeted six communities, two healthcare facilities, and one public school, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations benefit from improved access to clean water.

Zainab Bulama, a healthcare officer at Gamboru Primary Healthcare Centre, described the project’s impact on her community:

“Before S-WASH, we lacked clean water. Now, with the rehabilitated borehole and handwashing stations, we can teach hygiene practices and ensure quality care.”

Decades of Global Impact

Since its founding in 1984, the Coca-Cola Foundation has provided over $1.6 billion in grants globally, supporting initiatives that enhance community well-being, water conservation, and sanitation.

By addressing water scarcity in Borno, this latest effort reinforces the foundation’s mission to improve lives and create sustainable solutions for communities in need.

Looking Ahead

With water scarcity remaining a critical issue in Nigeria, initiatives like the Coca-Cola Foundation clean water project in Borno play a pivotal role in ensuring access to safe drinking water for vulnerable populations. By working with local partners and community members, the foundation is creating a lasting impact that will benefit generations to come.
