Airtel AI Spam Alert Service Detects 9.6 Million Spam Messages in Just Two Months

Lagos, Nigeria – June 2025 — In a bold move to protect customers from spam and scam messages, Airtel Nigeria has announced that its AI-powered Spam Alert Service successfully flagged over 9.6 million spam messages between March 13 and May 20, 2025.
As a leading telecommunications provider and subsidiary of Airtel Africa, Airtel Nigeria continues to pioneer customer-centric innovations in digital safety. The Spam Alert Service, launched on March 13, is a free tool that alerts users in real time to suspected spam messages by analysing over 250 parameters.
Spam Threats Flagged at Scale
Within its first two months, the AI system identified a staggering 9,667,008 SMS as potential spam. This included:
- 528,080 on-net messages (from Airtel to Airtel users)
- 9,138,928 off-net messages (from other networks)
This milestone not only highlights the scale of spam threats facing Nigerian users but also underlines Airtel’s AI processing power and its ability to protect customers across device types, including smartphones and feature phones.
A Commitment to Safer Digital Experiences
Dinesh Balsingh, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Nigeria, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to customer safety and digital innovation.
“This achievement showcases the strength of our AI-driven infrastructure in tackling the rising wave of spam and scam messages,” he said.
“We believe trust is the bedrock of digital communication. That’s why we’ve invested heavily in intelligent systems that evolve with data, ensuring users can communicate confidently and securely.”
